Expired TIE — what to do and how to renew it urgently

An expired TIE does not mean losing your residence, but it does create serious problems for working, travelling and completing procedures. This guide explains exactly what to do in 2026.

Urgent appointment — expired TIE

What are the consequences of an expired TIE?

✈️

You can't travel outside Schengen

With an expired TIE you cannot re-enter Spain from outside the Schengen area without a visa. If you travel, you could have problems returning.

💼

Problems with your employer

Some employers cannot keep you on the payroll without a valid TIE. If they ask for the card, you'll have to show the application receipt.

🏦

Hurdles at the bank

Some banks block transactions if your ID document is expired.

🏠

Difficulty renting

Landlords may reject your contract if your TIE is expired.

📋

Other procedures blocked

Padrón registration, driving-licence renewal, benefit applications.

Your residence is still valid

Your residence status depends on the decision, not the physical card. With an application in progress, you remain a resident.

Steps to renew an expired TIE

1

Apply for the renewal immediately

If your TIE has already expired, you are within the 90-day window after expiry to apply. After those 90 days it becomes much more complicated. Act today.

2

Get the immigration appointment (the hard part)

In Madrid and Barcelona, TIE renewal appointments have 30-60 day waits. With CitaEx you can get one in 5-15 days. For an expired TIE, we treat it as a priority case.

3

Gather your documents

Expired TIE, valid passport + photocopy, recent photo (white background, 32x26mm), paid form 790 code 012, completed EX-17, and documents proving the renewal grounds (work contract, updated padrón).

4

Attend the fingerprinting appointment

At the appointment you submit all the documents and your fingerprints are taken. You receive a receipt that acts as temporary proof of residence while the new TIE is produced.

5

Collect the new TIE

The new TIE takes 30-60 days to be ready after the fingerprinting appointment. You'll be notified when it's available to collect at the police station.

Frequently asked questions — expired TIE

What happens if my TIE expires and I don't have an appointment?

Your residence doesn't disappear, but you'll have problems working formally, travelling outside Schengen and completing procedures. Apply for the renewal right away even if you don't have an appointment yet — the application receipt protects you.

Can I keep working with an expired TIE?

If your renewal application is being processed (with the application receipt), you can keep working in many cases. With only an expired TIE and no application, your employer may have problems. Apply for the renewal immediately.

How far in advance should I apply to renew the TIE?

Between 60 days before expiry and 90 days after. Ideally 2-3 months before. In 2026, given waiting times, do it 3-4 months before it expires.
